American Windmill Museum 2010
Lubbock, Texas

One of the major attractions and a worthwhile visit in it's own right is the American Windmill Museum in Lubbock, Texas.

Windmill Windmill Windmill museum

This is by far the largest collection of windmills we have found which did present me with quite a dilemma. I'll be showing some of the outside collection but with the low light, the camera and lenses I had at the time, and the jam packed interior of the museum it was very difficult to get any clear meaningful photographs to look like any more than a pile of scrap. They have so much they are trying to protect from the weather it's more like a warehouse than the big box museums.

One of the great parts of the inside displays is the explanations of the various types and styles that have been used over the years from the old standby spinning wheel to the modern turbine styles. They also offer occasional classes in windmill repair which would be very nice to take if only for curiosity if the schedule could correlate with our being in the area. One of the class exercises is a climb up to the turbine running in front of the museum.

Windmill mural

The mural in their conference/party area was so wonderful I tried again to merge several photographs together to capture the whole all which does not even capture everything since it also covers the end wall to the left. I think this is some improvement over my previous attempts and was greatly aided by the Hugin Panorama photo stitcher and the new version released last year is much easier to use.
