After spending what I consider a substantial amount on the new Canon 30D DSLR with doodads, I wanted to learn how to use it better than I was picking up in books. Elderhostle, which is now called Road Scholar, had a program in late February at Auburn University that was both fun and informative.
One of the very special treats was to be allowed on top of the Haley Center and a birds eye view of the Auburn campus. This panorama covers about a 250o sweep from Tichenor Hall where our seminar was held on the left, past Samford Hall with the twin towers shown below, the library behind the dorms over to the new student center under construction to Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other special part of the seminar was a visit to Callaway Gardens in Georgia shown on another page.
Samford Hall with the red brick and towers is in my opinion the best looking building on campus. In contrast the Ralph Brown Draughon Library is more of a modern box although the columns try to add a classical look.
Founded in 1856, by Methodists as the East Alabama Male College; in 1872 it became the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama under the Land Grant Act. Then in 1899 it was renamed to Alabama Polytechnic Institute until finally in 1960 it was officially given it's original nickname of Auburn
. As shown in these pictures the architecture and building style is at least as varied as the names and over a hundred and fifty year period it is difficult to maintain a consistent style.
Finally to wrap things up we have a few critters. The turtle was part of one photography exercise at a campus pond. And if you had any doubt the reddish fellow is the Auburn Tiger fully dressed out in his coat and tie.
