Lexington has been a good motel stop over the years so we took a week on our way back to Columbus, Ohio to explore the area before heading east to Cave Run Lake and a week of camping to enjoy the fall colors. I've split off the Kentucky Botanical Garden here as a separate page since it was a treat all by itself.
To the left is a view of the Kentucky River from an overlook at Raven Run Park south of Lexington. It took us about a half hour to walk, climb, and crawl our way out here from the parking lot at the park. This was one of the better walks we had in Lexington which did not have much in the way of trails.
On the right is a view of one of the natural springs in McConnell Springs Park which was one of the first places settled in the Lexington area due to the reliable water supply. At one time it was a major source for the city which has now out grown the capacity of the small springs.
The Fire Museum had this really cool wildcat (this is Kentucky folks) sculpture as the centerpoint of the memorial to 911 display
We also spent considerable time just wandering about the downtown area enjoying the mixture of old and new architecture. Note the Turkey Vulture flying on the right side. Don't laugh! Turkey Vultures are really cool birds and one of nature's garbage men. When I get to later years I'll have a lot more details on these guys and some of their special capabilities.
Here are just a few of my favorites from the older buildings in the downtown area. I also got to practice using the reflections from one of the new style glass boxes to capture one of the vintage buildings that have real character. Once I discovered barn quilts we have generally stayed in the Georgetown area just a little to the north of Lexington.
