Youngstown 2010
Ohio

After over two months in Columbus we planed to spend a couple weeks in Northeast Ohio but when we arrived at the Berlin Lake campground they were closing in just a few days so we had a rather rushed visit.

Llama

Since we only had one full day for Youngstown we focused on Mill Creek. The Llama was at the Mill Creek Farm which is actually located in Canfield southwest of Youngstown proper. Originally an operating farm it is now primarily an educational facility operated under the MetroParks system.

Lanterman Falls Lanterman Mill

The big attraction at Mill Creek is the Lanterman Mill which was built in 1845 and fully restored in the mid 1980s. As I recall the original cost was about $8,000 in 1845 dollars and over $600,000 to restore in 1985 dollars.

Lanterman Mill Lanterman Mill

The overshot wheel was probably the original style for this third mill to be built on the site. The operating floor certainty did not have the protective railing to keep eager young fingers out of the machinery and the lighting was probably from the windows rather than lanterns which could ignite the very explosive flour dust.

Mill Creek Covered Bridge Covered Bridge

As Mill Creek and the local road intertwine the covered bridge is one crossing.

Mill Creek Cinderella Bridge

The iron frame Cinderella Bridge is another crossing along the road. As you can see at this time of year Mill Creek is rather small and well behaved. They do get snow up here and in the Spring the creek can turn into a raging torrent as indicated by the depth of the gorge.

A little further along the stream is the Fellows Riverside Garden which I put on this separate page since they had so many wonderful dahila in bloom.
