Japanese Tea Garden 2011
San Antonio, Texas

The Japanese Tea Garden is an oriental theme garden started in the early 1900s in an 1800s limestone quarry used in the construction of many buildings in San Antonio. The link above gives a good history I do not need to duplicate.

Old Quarry Kiln

This is the remnent of the older Alamo Cement Company kiln used to bake the limestone used in making cement as described in this rather self promoting article. At the time we visited it was roped off for safety concerns and the actual tea house adjacent to it was also closed for renovation. The garden has a rather checkered past with the Parks Department trying to appear they are supporting it when they're not and the city residents insisting it be maintained as a local treasure.

Waterfall Garden Lake

The inside of the quarry has been transformed with a series of trails that may pass VERY close to the waterfall, bridges, and special event areas. The garden is popular for weddings, family reunions where the kids can be allowed to run free without being out of sight, and other small meetings. Like I said the local residents consider it a real treasure and much more so with the opening of the cafe. On a later visit I took a large panorama series that I'll try to merge into maybe a 360+ degree view.
