Botanical Garden 2011
San Antonio, Texas

So what do you do on a cool blustery overcast day but visit the San Antonio Botanical Garden when the plantings can be photographed without them being blasted with the harsh sunlight.

Fountain Pool Japanese Garden Pool City Overlook

Water water everywhere will make the garden grow and with out a lot of it there is only junipers and jackrabbits. From the top of the hill overlook is a view of San Antonio downtown in the distance and the Lucile Halsell Conservatory on the left.

Conservatory Entrance Conservatory Fog

The conservatory can be a welcome relief from the chill but also has it's own set of issues. A cold camera is not at it's best in a warm humid environment and while this photograph shows the fog on the lens the condensation can also form inside the camera with disastrous results. We have also seen some conservatories with actual fog in an area like this without trying to fake it with a camera.

Inside is a tree that very actively discourages squirrels and other climbers. We have seen thorn bushes but these are rather more sturdy than the average. The conservatory complex also includes some protected outdoor areas that do not need to be tropical. While most gardens have a section kept very dry for the cacti and succulents that is not a real problem in San Antonio. Obviously here in January there are not a lot of flowers and I did not go wild on the cacti this time.
