UW Japanese Garden 2011
Seattle, Washington

The Seattle Japanese Garden is adjacent to the University of Washington Botanic Garden with a seperate entry and admission fee.

Birch Trunk Garden Path Japanese Maple

Opened in 1960 the garden is now showing the maturity and development that only comes with age. The Birch Tree has the size to be of interest in it's own right and the Azaleas are well established. One measure of the gardens age is this large Japanese Maple which grows very slowly.

Azaleas Blue Stalks

Always I find visiting the Pacific Northwest to be a bit disconcerting with so many flowers developing all at the same time due to the short growing season. In other area the Azaleas and these blue flowers are normally blooming in early spring and gone by here in mid May.

Azaleas Foot Bridge Stream and Red Flowers

The dark red flowers along the stream are a variety of Azaleas that have not fully matured into a large bush like the one next to the pond.

Japanese Fir Junipers Azaleas

Both the Azaleas and Junipers here have a very sculptured look that I am not sure is natural or helped out by the staff. The fir tree has the very light green I normally associate with new growth in the spring and I would expect it to be darker by now.

Pond, Lantern, Azaleas Pond, Lantern, Azelea Koi

Finishing up this visit are a few more views of the pond including a very colorful Koi.
