Southeastern Railway Museum
Georgia 2010

Located northeast of Atlanta in Duluth, Georgia the Southeastern Railway Museum was another great place to get out and wander on one of the more pleasant days although it's only open a few days a week so they need to coincide.

Steam engine and caboose

The museum has a number of these well restored and maintained locomotives, caboose, and other cars on display. I think this Chattahoochee Valley Railroad locomotive may actually been in operating condition. They are also funded well enough to have some very nice indoor storage facilities shown in the background.

Diesel locomotive Diesel switch locomotive Steam engine and caboose

I think "The General" steam locomotive and the diesel switch engine may also have been in operating condition. On our visit the Georgia Railroad 1026 was definitely a work in progress although the current website shows it as serviceable which gives them an unusual amount of actual working equipment.

Sleeper halway Sleeper compartment Coach seating Club car interior Mail car interior Pulman interior

There will be actual details on our Amtrak trip, but these views of the hallway down to the sleeper and the inside of a sleeper compartment are not too far off what you get today for several hundred dollars a night. The club car is not too far off of what was available on our trip and the cheap seats are an older and more beatup version of our seats although ours were on the second story with a better view. Now if you were rich enough to own the car you got some really nice digs. The mail car shows what the working folks had to deal with while the car was swaying on the move.

Model train layout Steam tractor Rail car suspension

Part of the inside displays was a rather nice model layout although it was in a really cramped location to photograph properly. While not strictly railway they are preserving several steam tractors which I appreciate. Finally there is an experimental closeup of the parts that give the wonderful smooth ride on the steel road.
