One of the newest additions to our national park system is the Waco Mammoth National Monument protecting the first and only nursery herd of Columbian mammoths preserved together in this country.
The mural depicts the scientists best guess of the environment when some natural disaster buried a mammoth nursery herd and several other of the animals shown in the mural in the special conditions needed to become the fossils discovered in 1978. As I recall we visited just after we had enjoyed (Lori not) a major thunderstorm in our tent the night before. The grounds were very wet and muddy so we just explored this enclosed part of the dig leaving the trails for a later visit. While I was photographing, Lori is on the other side talking to the ranger.
These are the remains of a bull, female, and juvenile not necessarily related but found together in this small area.
The camel fossil was also in the same area either because they traveled together or whatever disaster overcame them washed them all into the same area.
