This year we finally got in a serious visit to Virginia mostly focused on chasing fall colors which turned out to be rather disappointing.
Leaving Maryland we stopped overnight in Martinburg, West Virginia before spending a couple days in Winchester, Virginia on our way to wandering down the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. This photograph basically sums up our findings of mostly green with a little bit of fall color and a lot of haze in the distance.
After an overnight in Lury we spent a few days in Staunton, Virginia sorting out pictures and visiting the Sunspots Studio glassworks. This is also where I discovered one of the joys of mountain top photography is getting dust on the camera sensor when changing lenses. That required a 40 mile trip to Charlotteville for a cleaning and another 25 miles back to Waynesboro after sitting around for several hours to get the work done. Since this sensor cleaning was starting to become an expensive habit I found the swabs and solvent available on Ebay to do my own in the future.
Then we spent some more time exploring Skyline Drive with a visit to Crabtree Falls before deciding to give up the color search for this year and stop at the Edity Carrier Arboretum in Harrisonburg, Virginia on the way through West Virginia to camping with some friends in Kentucky.
This year was basically 2007 in reverse. Leaving Savannah, Georgia we stopped overnight in Charlotte and just continued back up I-77 returning to Columbus, Ohio.
Based in Columbus, Ohio for 25 years with a plant just south of Lynchburg, we have crossed Virginia many times and even taken some time to explore. In 2007 we only rocketed down from West Virginia on I-77, through the Bluefield Tunnel, and across to Charlotte, North Carolina. No pictures on this short visit but there will be a lot more when I get to later years.
